The Big Picture: Traffic Fatalities Are Falling, But Still High

NHTSA’s most recent data shows that traffic deaths fell to a record low in 2025, with an estimated 36,640 fatalities nationwide — a 6.7 percent decrease from 2024 and the second-lowest fatality rate ever recorded, at 1.10 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. This continued a streak of consecutive quarterly declines that began in 2022, following a spike in fatalities during the pandemic years.

That said, the country’s overall fatality rate remains high compared to many peer nations, and the raw numbers are still sobering: roughly 36,000 to 40,000 people are killed on U.S. roads every year, depending on the year in question. Understanding which specific types of crashes make up that total is where the more useful — and more actionable — data begins.

Single-Vehicle Crashes Cause the Majority of Fatal Accidents

One of the more counterintuitive findings in the data is that most fatal crashes do not involve a collision between two or more vehicles at all. In 2024, the majority of the nation’s 36,297 fatal crashes were single-vehicle crashes — incidents involving only one car, with no other vehicle involved. This category includes rollovers, run-off-road crashes, and collisions with fixed objects such as trees, guardrails, utility poles, or embankments.

Single-vehicle fatal crashes are often linked to speeding, impaired driving, driver fatigue, or a driver losing control on a curve or in poor weather. Head-on crashes frequently result from a driver crossing the centerline — due to distraction, impairment, drowsiness, or an unsafe passing maneuver — or from wrong-way driving on a divided highway. Because these crashes typically happen at higher combined speeds and involve direct frontal impact for both vehicles, survivors often face traumatic brain injuries, severe chest and abdominal trauma, and multiple fractures.

Rear-End Collisions: Common, and Often Preventable

Rear-end collisions accounted for roughly 7 percent of fatal crashes in 2024. While generally less severe than angle or head-on collisions, rear-end crashes become far more dangerous at highway speeds or when a following vehicle strikes a stopped or slow-moving vehicle without braking at all — a pattern strongly associated with distracted or fatigued driving. Motorcyclists Face the Highest Fatality Rate of Any Vehicle Type
